Former Hornet Courtney Hornsby (formerly Dietrich) was named the interim assistant volleyball coach at Sacramento State on Jan. 11, 2021. She held the position until the end of the 2021 spring season while assistant Sarah Chlebana was on maternity leave.

Hornsby helped coach the program through the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw the 2020 fall season pushed back to the spring of 2021. The Hornets finished the 2021 spring season (Jan. 24-Mar. 31) with a 10-7 overall record, including a 10-6 conference mark. In addition, four players were named to the all-conference team, including Big Sky Freshman of the Year Bridgette Smith.

Hornsby played four seasons (2013-16) for the Hornets at middle blocker and was a four-year starter. She finished with career numbers of 520 kills, 347 blocks and a .274 hitting percentage. A four-time Big Sky all-academic selection, the Chelan, Wash., native made a remarkable recovery from a major knee injury suffered in October of 2015 to return and enjoy a highly productive senior season.

As a senior (2016), Hornsby was a second team all-Big Sky selection while leading the conference with a .369 hitting percentage, a mark which also ranked 31st in the nation. The hitting percentage also remains the third best single-season mark in Sacramento State’s Div. I era while Hornsby posted averages of 1.50 kills and 0.76 blocks per set.

A 2016 team captain, Hornsby hit better than .300 during both her final two seasons, including a .308 mark as a junior. During her final two seasons, Hornsby helped Sacramento State post a 26-7 overall record and 12-4 mark in the Big Sky in 2015, and 20-12 and 13-3 in 2016.

Hornsby married former Sacramento State men’s basketball player Nick Hornsby in July of 2020. She graduated from Sacramento State in 2017 with a degree in child development.
