Biography

SENIOR (2021): Big Sky Honorable Mention (2x)...Senior midfielder and team captain Shay Valenzano turned in the best season of her career in her final campaign with Sacramento State...Played in and started all 19 of Sacramento State's matches, one of just three players to achieve that feat and shattering her previous career-highs (15 games, 10 starts) in the process...A crucial part of the team's midfield leadership, Valenzano played a career-high and team-leading 1,746 minutes out of a possible 1,769 minutes during the season...The veteran midfielder also scored her first career goal in her final season, a brilliant game-winner at home against Idaho on Oct. 8...Valenzano managed to weave her shot through traffic and into the back of the net in the 82nd minute of a 2-1 Hornets win...Also added an assist, the second of her career, in the Hornets 1-1 draw at home against CSU Bakersfield on Aug. 21...Played 90 or more minutes in 18 of her 19 matches, including a season-high 110 the draw against Bakersfield...Averaged a team-leading and career-best 92 minutes per match...Played a career-high 1,746 total minutes. 

SENIOR (2020): Big Sky Honorable Mention...Appeared in and started 10 of Sacramento State's 11 2020-21 matches, all in the midfield...Did not score a goal, but did attempt six shots, two shy of her career high...Attempted two shots twice, first on March 26 at Idaho, a match in which she placed both shots on goal, as well...Was one of the team's core members, playing almost every minute of every game...Played 90 or more minutes in all but one match, the team's season opener in which she played 75...Played 110 minutes four times and 104 in another...Averaged nearly 98 minutes per match while playing 979 minutes total on the season, fourth most on the team.

JUNIOR (2019): Played in 11 total games in 2019, starting nine of them...Did not appear in her first match until Sept. 22 at CSU Bakersfield after returning from injury...After coming off the bench in each of her first two matches back, started nine straight to end the season...Appeared in all nine regular season Big Sky matches (eight starts) as well as starting the team's tournament semifinal against Eastern Washington...Had one assist, the first of her career, in the team's Big Sky semifinal matchup against Eastern Washington...Averaged 51 minutes in each of her first three games back before averaging 90 in the remaining eight...Played 90 or more minutes seven times, including a season-high 109 minutes on Oct. 25 in a 1-0 win against Idaho...Totaled 874 minutes. 

SOPHOMORE (2018): Played in 15 of the team's 18 matches, making 10 starts...Played in eight of nine Big Sky matches with five starts...Took eight shots, placing four on goal (.500 sog%), but did not score...Took three corner kicks for the Hornets...Played double-digit minutes in all 15 matches, averaging more than 63 minutes per match...Total 950 minutes. 

FRESHMAN (2017): Did not play.

HIGH SCHOOL: Played four years for coach Ana Jones at Whitney HS...All-Capital Valley Conference (CVC) first team selection in 2015 and 2016...Named team MVP in 2015...Four-year team captain (three years on varsity)...Had five goals and seven assists in 16 games as a junior, five goals and four assists in 18 games as a sophomore...Ranked second on the team in assists both years...Only female nominated for school CLAW award for best overall soccer player...Also played club soccer for seven years with Blues FC...Had 18 goals and seven assists in 2015-16 season...Played with fellow Hornet recruit Christina Lazar.

PERSONAL: Majoring in nursing…would like to work as a travel nurse…parents are Robert and Kim Valenzano
