2022-23 Season
An honorable mention all-Big Sky Conference performer after playing all 32 games, including 31 starts…led the team in scoring with 13.5 points per game…also averaged 2.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.0 steal and 30.7 minutes per contest…shot 36% (58-160) from the 3-point line and 77% (91-119) from the free throw line…led the team in scoring, 3-pointers made and steals…seventh in the Big Sky in steals per game…led the Hornets in scoring in 15 games…double figure scorer in 20 games…averaged 12.4 ppg in conference play, second best on the Hornets…hit game-winning buckets in the closing seconds against both Denver and Long Beach State…also hit the game winner at Idaho…named the College Insider National Player of the Week, and Big Sky Player of the Week on Dec. 12…scored in double digits 42 times during his three-year tenure with the Hornets…averaged 16.0 ppg over final three games…finished collegiate career with 1,203 points, including 860 in a Sacramento State uniform…a Big Sky All-Academic and NABC Honors Roll recipient.
2021-22 Season
Played in all 29 games, including 27 starts…finished with averages of 11.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game…shot 39% from the field and 36% from the 3-point line…Hornets’ second leading scorer…posted double-figure points on 17 occasions…that included a run of seven straight games from Jan. 20-Feb. 5…ranked ninth in the Big Sky in steals, and 10th in free throw percentage (.803)…had a career-high 30 points at Idaho on 11-for-17 shooting and 5-of-9 from the 3-point line…had four games with over 20 points, including 24 at Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona, and 22 at Montana State…posted 19 points in the Hornets’ Big Sky Tournament quarterfinal game vs. Montana State…on the road, Chappell upped his averages to 13.5 points on 40% shooting from the 3-point line…buried at least three 3-pointers on eight occasions…drew five charges during the season.
2020-21 Season
Played in 13 games in his first season after transferring from San Jose State…missed the first seven games of the season with injury…averaged 7.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.9 steals and 16.4 minutes per game…shot 55% (32-58) from the field, 50% (8-16) from the 3-point line and 72% (21-29) from the free throw line…had a 1.4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio…scored in double figures in three of the final five games of the season…that included the Hornets’ Big Sky Tournament game vs. Northern Colorado in which he scored 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 from the 3-point line…scored in double figures in five games total…had 11 points in the regular season finale win at Montana State in which he buried two free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to deliver a 74-73 Hornet win.
Prior to Sacramento State
Played two seasons (2018-20) at San Jose State of the Mountain West Conference…played in all 31 games as the team’s sixth man as a sophomore…averaged 6.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.9 steals and 19.6 minutes per game…scored in double figures nine times, including a season-best 20 points at Santa Clara…also had seven assists vs. New Mexico…as a true freshman with the Spartans, he started 15 games while averaging 5.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 17.6 minutes per contest…scored in double figures seven times as a freshman, including 17 points, nine assists and one turnover vs. New Mexico…also had 14 points in 36 minutes at San Diego State…named academic all-Mountain West in 2019…had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio both seasons, and got to the free throw line 125 times over two years.
High School
A 2018 graduate of Capital Christian High School in Sacramento where he played his junior and senior seasons with current Hornet guard Rick Barros III…was a four-year starting varsity player for the Cougars…two-time Golden Empire League MVP, first team all-league and all-metro selection…averaged double figures in points all four seasons, including 20.3 points, 4.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 55% from the field and 47% from the 3-point line as a senior…the program’s all-time leader in career points and wins…helped lead the team to four league championships, two section titles (2015, 2017), a 91-36 overall record and a 48-0 mark in league…also helped the team reach the state championship game in 2015…selected to the 2018 Optimist All-Star Game, and named the NorCal Clash MVP in 2016.
Personal
Parents are Kevin and Kalyn Chappell…a philosophy major who graduated from Sacramento State in the spring of 2022…working on a master’s degree in philosophy…would like to become a youth minister after college…has two brothers, LaBrent and Ryan Chappell, who played collegiate basketball…father, Kevin, played basketball and football at UC Davis.
