25 Fraser bio

Jason Fraser

Jason Fraser begins his first season as assistant coach at Sacramento State for the 2025-26 season.

A seasoned basketball coach and former elite-level player, Fraser brings over 10 years of coaching experience at the NBA, G-League, Div. I, AAU and high school levels. A member of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in his native New York, Fraser also has 15 years of experience in team building, cultural implementation, community relations, fundraising, and public speaking.

His NBA coaching experience includes two years as an assistant with the Phoenix Suns (2015-17), and one season with the Austin Spurs - the G-League affiliate for the San Antonio Spurs - during the 2014-15 season. He helped develop current NBA players Devin Booker, Alex Len and Wendell Carter Jr., as well as former NBA player JaMychal Green.

A double major at Villanova where he played four seasons for head coach Jay Wright, Fraser was the director of student-athlete development at his alma mater during the 2013-14 season.

Most recently, he was the Dean of Students and Athletics Director at Sun Valley Academy (Phoenix), and prior to that, the associate head coach at his high school alma mater (Amityville HS in New York) in 2022-23. He served as the head varsity coach and Assistant Athletics Director at Skyline Prep High School in Phoenix (2018-21) where he was a two-time Canyon Athletic Association Coach of the Year.

Fraser was a McDonald’s All-American during his prep career at Amityville High School. He was ranked among the top five high school players in the country, the New York State Player of the Year, and graduated from Amityville as the school’s all-time leader in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. He led the team to three consecutive state championships, never lost a home game during his career, and helped Amityville to a victory over LeBron James and St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

One of the top recruits in the country, he played for Villanova four seasons (2002-06), and was a member of Jay Wright’s first full recruiting class. Fraser had injury setbacks all four seasons at Villanova, but still finished his collegiate career with averages of 5.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks while shooting 57 percent from the field.

At the 2005 NCAA Tournament, Fraser had 21 points and 15 rebounds en route to a 76-65 win over Florida in the second round, delivering Villanova its first Sweet 16 appearance since 1988. A fan favorite, Fraser helped Villanova to a Big East Conference regular season title and Elite Eight appearance during his senior season (2005-06).

After college, he played professionally in New Zealand, and later the Harlem Globetrotters (2008-09). A double major at Villanova (sociology and criminology), Fraser graduated in 2006.

Fraser has three children - Blessing Fraser, Jr. Fraser, and Aleeyah Fraser
