Sacramento State

Brandon Blackmon is the newest member of the Sacramento State coaching staff as he was hired to coach the Hornet safeties in July 2026.

Blackmon served as the defensive coordinator at Delaware State during the 2025 season. Helped the Hornets to a dramatic turnaround as the team improved from 1-11 to 8-4. The defense recorded 29 sacks during the season and created 18 turnovers. Brian Bates was named first team all-MEAC after leading the team with 80 tackles, including seven for loss.

From 2023-24, Blackmon was the cornerbacks coach and assistant special teams coordinator at Tennessee Tech. Prior to that, he spent 2020-22 at the wide receivers coach at New Mexico. In 2022, receiver Luke Wysong led the team with 34 catches for 291 yards as Lobo receivers accounted for 69.3% of all receptions (95 of 137) and 100% of all of UNM’s receiving touchdowns.  The 34 catches were the most by a Lobo in a season since 2015 and the second-most since 2011. In 2021, Lobo receivers were stellar, led by freshman Luke Wysong, who was one of two freshmen that was named honorable mention all-Mountain West.  Wysong led UNM with 24 receptions and 224 yards, both totals which were second in the Mountain West among all freshmen.  In 2020, UNM receivers stepped up big. Redshirt freshman Andrew Erickson tied for the team lead in touchdown receptions, and senior Mannie Logan-Greene led the team with 30 receptions in just seven games, and it was the most receptions per game for a team leader in the last 10 years.

Blackmon spent one season (2019) at Western Illinois as the defensive backs coach, There, he coached Marquis Smith, who finished the season 20th in the FCS and third in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with 12 passes broken up, adding an interception. He preceded that stay with two seasons at Arizona State, serving as the tight ends coach and later as a defensive graduate assistant.

Blackmon began his coaching career at Augustana College during the 2010 season, and had a two-year stint as a high school assistant coach, before stepping up to the professional level as the defensive coordinator for the Texas Revolution of Champions Indoor Football from 2013-14.

He played collegiately at Mt. SAC JC in Walnut, Calif., before transferring to Purdue (2006) and finished at Tennessee State (2007-08). He graduated from TSU with a degree in Africana studies in 2008. Brandon and his wife, Charis, are the parents to daughter Aubrey and son D'Anthony.
