SAN FRANCISCO — The Sacramento State men's cross country placed sixth and the women eighth at the USF Invitational on Friday afternoon at Golden Gate Park. The men were led by Ryan Martin who finished in 19^th place while freshman Taylor Wellersdick paced the women with a 30^th-place showing.
 
The men had three runners place among the top 40 with the veteran combo of Martin and Brandon Moreno leading the way. Martin ran 24:42.8 with Moreno slightly more than four seconds back (24:47.0) to take 22^nd. Freshman Lucas Ruark had a strong showing in his collegiate debut by completing the 8K course in 25:05.0 to place 38^th. The remainder of the team score was comprised of Thomas Rasner (70^th, 25:56.0) and freshman Matthew Bertrand (79^th, 26:03.9).
 
Sacramento State totaled 191 points to claim victories over four other NCAA Div. I programs. CBU won the meet with 33 points and was followed in the top three by host USF (50 points) and Cal (77).
 
Wellersdick, a freshman from Chico, Calif., finished 20 seconds ahead of the rest of her teammates after running 21:48.6 over the 6K course. The team's next five finishers all crossed within 30 seconds of each other with Kate Sanders ranking second on the team in 22:09.4. Dakota Gibson (42^nd, 22:19.6), Keira Quigley (46^th, 22:25.4) and Meg Moyer (58^th, 22:36.4) rounded out the top five.
 
USF easily won the team title with 41 points. Stanislaus State was second with 82 to edge CBU (87).
 
Sacramento State will next compete at the UCR Invitational in Riverside, Calif., on Sept. 19.
