RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's cross country team finished ninth and the men 11^th as the teams competed at The Big West Championships for the first time in school history on Saturday. The Hornets were led by Ryan Martin in the men's race and Marina Lipary in the women's competition.
 
The men took to the course first where Martin finished the 8K race in 24:28.6 to place 40^th in his first race since Sept. 19. Freshman Lucas Ruark ranked second on the team with a time of 24:31.5 to finish 43^rd. Brandon Moreno was third among Hornets in 24:44.5 (52^nd) while Matthew Bertrand (84^th, 25:37.0) and Thomas Rasner (94^th, 26:13.5) completed the team's scorers.
 
CBU edge Utah Valley to win the men's team title. The Lancers finished with 28 points and had three of the top four finishers while UVU totaled 33 points and had four of the top seven to cross the line.
 
Lipary and Kate Sanders were the top finishers for the women as the pair placed 41^st and 43^rd, respectively. Lipary ran 20:58.2 over the 6K course while Sanders had a time of 21:03.2. The three remaining times toward the team score came from Dakota Gibson (57^th, 21:25.9), Meg Moyer (62^nd, 21:36.8) and Keira Quigley (63^rd, 21:37.1).
 
The women's team results saw Utah Valley win the title with 44 points while CBU was second with 63. Cal Poly's Tatiana Cornejo was the individual champion with a time of 18:55.4 to win the race by 2.9 seconds.
 
Sacramento State's final race of the season will be at the NCAA West Regional at Haggin Oaks GC on Nov. 13.
