OGDEN, Utah -- After being limited to three hits in the Game 1, Sacramento State sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning of Game 2 to eventually gain a doubleheader split at Weber State on Friday afternoon. The Hornets dropped the first game, 5-2, before winning the second game, 14-0, in five innings.
The Hornets moved their record to 23-14 overall and 2-3 in the Big Sky Conference. Including last week's three-game set at Northern Colorado, Sacramento State is playing each of its first six conference games on the road. The Hornets and Weber State will conclude their series tomorrow with a single game at 11 a.m. PT.
In that first inning, Sacramento State had 12 runs on nine hits, and six different Hornets had RBIs in the inning. That included
Madison Evers-Lyles and
Shannon Garcia who had RBIs in both their at-bats in the first. The 12-run inning was the second biggest in program history, trailing only the 13 runs scored in the fourth against Miami University on March 18, 2006, at the Capital Classic.
The first inning consisted of:
•
Lafulafu Malepeai RBI-single
• Evers-Lyles sacrifice fly
• Garcia RBI-single
•
Ava Medellin 3-run double
•
Saskia Raab RBI-single
• Evers-Lyles two-run single
•
Madi Mendoza 2-run double
• Garcia RBI-single
The Hornets would tack on additional runs in the second and third, and easily mercy ruled Weber State, 14-0. Every Sacramento State starter had at least one hit, and five players had two hits apiece, comprised of
Addy Buckley, Malepeai, Evers-Lyles, Garcia and
Karissa Avila. Malepeai had hits in both games and improved her hitting streak to 10 games. She also upped her batting average to a team-best .407.
Alexa Ortiz (3.0 ip, 3 hits, 3 K's) and
Kyndal Williams (2.0 ip, 2 hits, 3 K's) combined on a five-hit shutout.
The first game was the exact opposite of the nightcap. After Sacramento State opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning, the team was held scoreless the rest of the way by Weber State pitcher Cali McCraw. The Wildcats scored five unanswered runs, including three in the first inning and single runs in the fourth and fifth.
The Hornets' lone two runs came on a double by Evers-Lyles in the first inning that plated Garcia and Malepeai. Two of the team's three hits came from Malepeai, who was 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored.
Kennedie Bacon (4.0 IP) and
Danyelle Leone (2.0 IP) both pitched for the Hornets.
