SOFTBALL’S MADI MENDOZA NAMED THE BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SACRAMENTO -- After leading Sacramento State to a 2-1 series win over Montana, junior Madi Mendoza has been named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week.

She becomes the third Hornet to earn the honor, joining Katie Marsh (Feb. 16) and Lafulafu Malepeai (March 2).

The shortstop hit .727 (8-for-11) with three doubles, a homer, two stolen bases, 14 total bases and three RBIs. She also posted a .750 on-base percentage, 1.273 slugging percentage and a 2.023 ops.

Mendoza had multiple-hit, and multiple-RBI games in all three contests while also tallying at least one extra base hit in each game. That included scoring two runs in the opener, and three runs in both the second and third games.

In Game 1, Mendoza was 3-for-4 with a double, stolen base and two runs scored, and followed that in Game 2 by going 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and an RBI. In Saturday's rubber game, the El Paso, Texas, native went 2-for-4 with three runs, a homer, walk, stolen base and two RBIs.

This week's production lifted her season batting average to .325, and her average against Big Sky opposition jumped to .379.

Sacramento State (26-15, 5-4) sits in a three-way tie for second place in the Big Sky standings with just six conference games remaining. The Hornets will play at first place Idaho State (29-16, 6-3) on Friday-Saturday.
