SOFTBALL FALLS IN EXTRA INNINGS TO SAN DIEGO, 3-2

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State stranded a season-high 13 runners on base, including seven in the final three innings, on the way to a 3-2 eight-inning loss to San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Hornets took two of three in the series after sweeping San Diego in a doubleheader yesterday. Sacramento State - playing the fifth leg of a six-game homestand - moved its record to 20-11. The Toreros improved to 13-16.

Sacramento State had plenty of chances to win, which included a runner being thrown out at home in the sixth. Also, the Hornets loaded the bases with no outs in both the seventh and eighth innings, but could plate just one run in each frame.

With the score tied, 1-1, San Diego had some fortune in the eighth against Hornet reliever Danyelle Leone. After retiring the first two hitters of the inning, Leone issued a bad hop infield single followed by a double that was misplayed in left field, and another double that was a routine fly ball to center lost in the sun. By the time the inning ended, the Toreros had scored twice and took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth.

The Hornets loaded the bases with no out in the bottom of the eighth on a Shannon Garcia double and walks to Malissa George and Faith Epperson. After a strikeout, Lafulafu Malepeai singled home Garcia to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Hornets would not score again.

The game was scoreless through five innings as right-hander Kyndal Williams was very good, allowing just five hits and a run with a season-high six strikeouts in six innings. The Toreros opened the scoring in the sixth with a two-out, RBI-single, but the Hornets tied things at 1-1 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Saskia Raab.

The Hornets had 11 hits (one shy of a season best), including three each from Garcia and Malepeai, and two from Mendoza. Garcia was 3-for-3 with a walk and a double.

Leone (4-2) took the loss, tossing the final two innings after taking over for Williams. San Diego's Kelsey Tadlock got the win, throwing the first 3.2 innings of the game, and re-entering to throw the final two frames. Reliever Charlie Johnson somehow gave up just one run despite allowing six hits in eight batters faced spanning one-plus inning of work.

The Hornets conclude their six-game homestand on Tuesday against UC Davis at 3 p.m. Sacramento State will then jump into Big Sky Conference play on Friday-Saturday for a three-game set at Northern Colorado.
