SACRAMENTO -- Colorado State's Reagan Wick threw a four-hit shutout to lead the Rams to a 7-0 victory over Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Today's game marked the Hornets' finale of the NorCal Kickoff. Sacramento State had won its first four games of the season prior to this morning's loss. In fact, the Hornets hadn't trailed all year (30 straight innings) until the Rams hit a three-run homer in the third inning.
The Hornets saw their record fall to 4-1, while Colorado State improved to 3-2. The Hornets opened the season with a road win at UC Davis, prior to going 3-1 at the NorCal Kickoff.
Wick, who threw a no-hitter vs. Cal Poly on Friday, continued her dominance today at the tournament. The left-hander allowed just four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over seven innings. Of the four hits, only one went for extra bases (double from
Shannon Garcia), and the Hornets did not advance a runner past second base.
Sacramento State used four pitchers, and right-hander
Alexa Ortiz was effective again. In three innings of relief, she allowed just two hits with no runs and a strikeout. In three appearances this season, Ortiz has a 0.00 ERA, and has allowed four hits with 17 strikeouts in 15 innings. Opponents are hitting just .080 when she's in the circle.
Colorado State scored three times in the third, and four times in the seventh, highlighted by home runs from Kyra Smith and Autumn Rutherford.
Madi Mendoza led the Hornets with two hits, while Garcia and
Saskia Raab also had a hit. Garcia's knock was a one-out double in the third.
Lafulafu Malepeai saw her career-high hitting streak of 16 games (dating back to last season) come to an end.
Kennedie Bacon (2.0 ip), Ortiz (3.0 ip),
Keeli Smith (1.1 ip) and
Danyelle Leone (0.2) each pitched for the Hornets.
Sacramento State is back in action next week when it competes at the three-day GCU Invite in Phoenix. The Hornets will play five times between Friday and Sunday, beginning with a Friday matchup vs. South Dakota at 12:15 p.m. PT.
