PHOENIX --
Kennedie Bacon tossed a five-hit shutout, and
Katie Marsh homered to lead Sacramento State to a 1-0 victory over Harvard on Saturday afternoon at GCU Softball Stadium.
The Hornets improved to 3-1 at the three-day GCU Invite, which includes a walkoff 5-4 victory over South Dakota this morning.
Sacramento State moved its overall record to 7-2, the program's best mark after nine games since the 1995 team was 8-1. That 1995 squad won 40 games and hosted an NCAA Regional.Â
Harvard was playing its first game of the season.
Bacon (3-1) tossed her second shutout of the season, allowing just five hits (all singles) with five strikeouts over seven innings. She induced 13 ground-ball outs, and retired 12 straight batters between the third and seventh innings. She stranded five runners on base in the first two innings, which included working of a bases loaded, one-out situation in the second.
Marsh provided the lone run of the game with a fourth-inning homer that cleared the center field fence. The homer was her third of the season, and she has connected on round trippers in back-to-back games.Â
Seven Hornet starters collected a hit, including doubles from
Shannon Garcia,
Malissa George and
Madison Evers-Lyles.
Saskia Raab and
Ava Medellin both had a hit and stolen base.
Sacramento State pitching, with a 1.99 ERA this season, has limited the opposition to two runs or less in six of the team's nine games.
The Hornets conclude the tournament tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. PT vs. South Dakota. This will be the team's third matchup against the Coyotes during the tournament.
