SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team nearly swept through doubles then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets on Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 6-1 victory in its home opener over visiting Saint Mary's at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex.
The victory evened the Hornets' record at 2-2 overall on the year while the Gaels fell to 1-1 on the season.
Freshman Cami Maldonado Gutierrez and junior Irene Riva opened the day with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles before junior Lou Baudouin and sophomore Emilija Pranyte clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 3 for a 1-0 lead in the match. The tandem of seniors Palina Saulevich and Reese Walker were leading 5-3 at No. 2 doubles before begin halted early.
Maldonado Gutierrez then put her team up 2-0 with a win over Sophie Stanton at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-3, before Saint Mary's answered with a win at No. 4 to break up the shutout.
From that point on, it was all Sacramento State as Saulevich, Riva, Baudouin, and Walker followed with straight-set victories en route to the victory. Riva's 6-2, 6-3, win over Tiana Fox at No. 2 was the clinching point — her first of the year.
The Hornets' three-match home stand continues on Friday (Feb. 6) at Noon, hosting Washington State.
