THREE IN DOUBLE FIGURES AS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EARNS RARE ROAD WIN IN MISSOULA

MISSOULA, Mont. — Sophomore guard Rubi Gray finished with a game-high 18 points and junior guard Natalie Picton drained a pair of clutch baskets down the stretch, helping the Sacramento State women's basketball team to a 64-57 victory over Montana on Saturday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena.

It marked only the second-ever victory in 32 tries for the Hornets in Missoula — and the 10th overall against the Grizzlies — snapping a four-game skid in the series overall and winning for the first-time on the road against Montana since a 73-60 win in 2017.

With the win, Sacramento State moved to 11-11 overall and 5-4 in Big Sky Conference play, while the Grizzlies fell to 7-14 overall and 4-6 in league.

Gray finished 6-of-14 from the field with four of those coming from beyond the arc, adding a pair of rebounds and two steals. It was her 16th double-digit scoring game in her last 19 contests.

Picton and senior guard Benthe Versteeg added 17 points apiece, with Picton sinking a team-high seven baskets while grabbing a career-high eight rebounds. Versteeg was 6-for-13 from the field en route to her game total, dishing out seven assists, swiping three steals, and grabbing three rebounds.

Senior forward Fatoumata Jaiteh grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Hornets on the glass, helping Sacramento State to a 41-32 advantage on the boards for the game.

The Hornets never trailed by more than three, breaking a 29-all tie at halftime with a dominant third quarter, doubling-up the Grizzlies, 20-10, in the period and going up by as many as 11 points en route to a 10-point heading into the final period.

Host Montana did not go away quietly, opening the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run — including eight straight points at one moment — to cut the Hornets advantage down to just one with 7:31 to play. It was nip-and-tuck from that point on as Jaiteh scored inside and Picton drained a three to push the lead back to six, but the Grizzlies answered quickly.

A lay-up and a three-pointer clawed the Grizzlies back to within a point before Picton came through in the clutch in the final minute. With 32 seconds remaining, the junior drained a turnaround floater with the shot clock expiring to make it 58-55 then, after a Montana timeout, found a lane and dropped one in to make it a five-point advantage with 13 seconds to go.

Jaiteh and Versteeg then drained all of their free throw attempts around a pair from the line by the Grizzlies for the final tallies.

Sacramento State shot 43 percent from the field for the game while the defense limited Montana to 35 percent and just 27 percent from beyond the arc on 41 attempts.

The Hornets wrap-up a run of three games in five days on Monday night (Feb.2) at 5 p.m., traveling to Ogden, Utah, to take on Weber State.
