DAVIS, Calif. -- Sacramento State earned singles wins from
Nick Bowles (No. 4) and
Sebastian Vlahos (No. 6), but it was not enough in UC Davis' 5-2 victory over the Hornets on Saturday at Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The Aggies improved to 3-2 on the young season, while the Hornets dropped to 2-3. Of Sacramento State's first five matches, four have come on the road. Sacramento State used five underclassmen in today's match, including three freshmen and two sophomores. The team has zero seniors on the roster.
UC Davis began the match by winning the doubles point after taking Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. In singles play, Vlahos won in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) while Bowles won in a third set super tiebreak (7-6, 3-6, 10-5).
Martin Duris fell at No. 1, and saw his four-match singles winning streak come to a close.
Freddie Healey lost in narrow fashion in his third set super tiebreak by a 10-8 score.
Adryan Ballestero, who was playing at No. 5, sprained his ankle on the first point of the match and had to retire in an extremely unlucky fashion.
The Hornets are back in action next Sunday, Feb. 8, when they travel to Saint Mary's.
