Martin Duris,
Doni Gashi,
Freddie Healey and
Sebastian Vlahos to defeat Saint Mary's, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets improved to 3-2 on the road this season, and 3-3 overall. Of the team's first six matches of the season, five have come on the road. Sacramento State, playing with a singles lineup that consisted of five underclassmen (three sophomores, two freshmen), has been close in each of its three losses as well.
Today, Sacramento State beat a Saint Mary's team that had been undefeated at home (2-0), and won on the road at UC Davis, 4-3, two weeks ago.
After dropping the doubles point, Sacramento State won the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. That included wins from Gashi at No. 2 (6-3, 7-6), Duris at No. 1 (7-5, 7-5) and Healey at No. 3 (6-3, 3-6, 6-3).
After the Gaels closed the deficit to 3-2 with a win at No. 4, Vlahos, a true freshman, won his match at No. 6 to provide the clincher. Scores were 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
Duris improved to 5-1 in singles play, while Healey is now 3-1 and Vlahos 3-2.
The Hornets are back in action for another road match next Sunday at Pacific. Match time is noon.
