SACRAMENTO -- In one of the tightest matches Sacramento State will play all season featuring five singles matches going to three sets, the Hornets fell to Nevada, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets (2-2) were playing their home opener after beginning the season last week with three matches on the road. Nevada improved to 4-0 on the young season. Sacramento State used three sophomores, two freshmen and a junior in its singles lineup.
The 5-2 score was not nearly indicative of how close the match was played. Every singles match went three sets, except at No. 4 when
David Dai fell in two close sets, 6-4, 6-4. And Nevada won two of its singles matches in a third set tiebreak at Nos. 2 and 6 where
Doni Gashi and
Sebastian Vlahos lost, respectively.
Sacramento State earned wins from
Martin Duris at No. 1 (7-6, 2-6, 6-3) and
Freddie Healey at No. 4 (6-1, 4-6, 6-2). Duris has yet to lose in singles play this season, including a 3-0 mark at No. 1, and 1-0 at No. 2.
Nick Bowles fell in three sets at No. 3 (6-4 in the third) as all six singles matches were tight affairs.
All three doubles matches, not surprisingly, were close. Nevada won two of the three, winning at No. 1 by a 7-6 score, and No. 3 by a 6-4 score. The Hornets got a win at No. 2 from Duris/Bowles (6-4). The doubles point came down to No. 1, where Gashi/
Adryan Ballestero lost their tiebreaker, 7-5.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday at UC Davis. Match time is noon.
