MEN’S TENNIS FALLS ON THE ROAD TO UC SAN DIEGO, 4-3

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Sacramento State received singles wins from Martin Duris (No. 1), Freddie Healey (No. 4) and David Dai (No. 5), but it was not enough in the Hornets' 4-3 road loss at UC San Diego on Friday afternoon.

The Hornets, who were coming off a season-opening doubleheader sweep of UC Riverside on Wednesday, dropped to 2-1 on the young season. UC San Diego improved to 1-2 after opening the year with losses to San Diego State and 19th-ranked USC.

The Tritons opened the match by securing the double point after wins at Nos. 2 and 3. UC San Diego then won two straight singles matches to take a 3-0 lead after the Hornets' Nick Bowles (No. 3) and Sebastian Vlahos (No. 6) fell in straight sets.

However, Sacramento State would win three of the next four singles matches, and the one loss (Doni Gashi at No. 2) came via two tight tiebreaker scores of , 7-6 (6), 7-6 (8).

Sacramento State closed to within, 3-2, after wins by Duris (7-5, 2-6, 6-1) and Dai (6-3, 5-7, 6-4). Gashi's match clinched the win for UC San Diego, and Healey won his match (6-7, 6-2, 7-5) to provide the final outcome.

Today's Hornet singles lineup featured three sophomores, two freshmen and a junior. Gashi, the lone junior, is the team's only upperclassman.

Sacramento State concludes a stretch of four road matches in four days when the Hornets play at Point Loma tomorrow at 4 p.m.
