SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In one of the longest-running rivalries in program history, the Sacramento State men's soccer team battled San Jose State tooth and nail, but could not find the back of the net, falling by a 2-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.
The Spartans scored twice in the first 10 minutes for the only scores they would need on the day. Cameron Cook netted his first of the year at the 5:03 mark and Daniel Fregoso Bautista added his first at 9:53 of the first half for the quick 2-0 lead.
That would be all San Jose State would get, however, despite a 21-5 shot advantage as junior goalkeeper Lucas Bost made a career-high six saves with four of those coming in the first half.
The match saw 29 total fouls called and eight total cards issued including a pair of yellows that forced the Hornets to play a man down for the final 39 minutes of the contest, but the home side defended well, denying SJSU any further chances to pull away.
Sacramento State plays its next two matches on the road, both against West Coast Conference competition. The Hornets open on Thursday (Sept. 11) at Pacific before heading to the Bay Area next Monday (Sept. 15) to meet San Francisco. Both matches are scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
