SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Host Sacramento State attempted 12 of its 14 shot attempts in the second half, but it was enough to overcome a pair of goals 59 seconds apart by visiting Hawai'i as the Rainbow Wahine shut out the homestanding Hornets, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.
Sacramento State suffered its fourth consecutive defeat in falling to 2-4 overall, while Hawai'i improved to 2-3-2 overall on the year.
Despite facing a 12-2 deficit in the shot column in the opening 45 minutes, the Hornets' defense was able to turn back the Hawai'i attack as junior goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier made six of her career-high tying 11 saves to keep the visitors scoreless at the break.
Palmatier's total matched her output against Cal Poly on Aug. 29, 2024, and marked the fourth time she has finished with double-digit saves in a match in her career. In addition, the 11 saves pushed her over the 200-save plateau for her career, giving her a total of 209 and moving her into fifth on the school's all-time list.
Hawai'i opened the second half with three of the first four shots before cashing in for the first goal of the match off a corner kick in the 57th minute, then needed less than a minute to double its lead in the 58th minute on a shot from the top of the box that snuck inside the left post for the final 2-0 score.
Junior Tea Reyes and sophomore Tierra Pickell each finished with three shots apiece to lead the Hornets, while Ellie Farber, Bri Prado, and Micaela Romo attempted a pair apiece.
Sacramento State closes out its season-long four-match homestand on Sunday (Sept. 7) at Noon, hosting San Jose State at Hornet Soccer Field. The team will honor its seniors at approximately 11:45 a.m. prior to kickoff.
