VOLLEYBALL CRUSHES PACIFIC, IMPROVES TO 2-0 AT CENTRAL CAL CHALLENGE

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State hit .330, did not trail the final two sets, and was never threatened in a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-16, 25-10) of Pacific on Friday evening at the Nest.

Sacramento State improved to 2-0 at the Central Cal Challenge, and wraps up the tournament tomorrow vs. Fresno State at 1:30 p.m. The three-day event also features CSU Bakersfield, a team the Hornets swept yesterday. In today's early match, Fresno State swept the Roadrunners. All four matches of the tournament have been sweeps, including Pacific beating Fresno State yesterday.

Winners of six of their last eight matches, the Hornets (6-5) crept above the .500 mark for the first time this season. The team has also won three straight, its longest winning streak of the young season.

The Hornets' .330 hitting percentage (37-8-88) was their second highest mark of the season. Conversely, Pacific hit just .057 (26-21-87) as the Hornets dominated in every statistical category except digs. That included a season-high tying 10 aces as Pacific's passing broke down. Leading the way were Reese Ampi (3), Kate Doorn (3) and Victoria Marthaler (2) who all had multiple aces.

Sacramento State also had a season-best 11.0 team blocks, including five from Ashlynn Archer, and four each from Greta Davis and Skyler Gartin. Archer continued her dominance as she led all players with 13 kills to go with a .476 hitting percentage. The senior middle blocker is on a torrid pace that has seen her hit above .475 in six straight matches.

The Hornets ran a successful 6-2 offense all evening as freshman Kaylee Piepho had a season-best 18 assists while Doorn had 14 assists. Middle blocker Skyler Gartin, who has battled injuries all season, was nearly unstoppable with six kills, an .857 hitting percentage (6-0-7) and four blocks in just two sets played. Both Marthaler and Keonahi'ilani Solaita finished with seven kills.

Libero Reese Ampi had 10 digs, and has led the Hornets in digs in all but one match this season.
