WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Sophomore Jaety Mandaquit scored her first career goal in the 64th minute and junior goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier made eight saves en route to her 13th career shutout as the Sacramento State women's soccer team opened the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff with a 1-0 shutout of Oregon on Thursday evening in Waipahu, Hawaii.
The Hornets have yet to surrender a goal in 2025, improving to 2-0 on the year following last week's 3-0 victory over Pacific to open the campaign — the program's first 2-0 start since the 2007 squad opened with three straight victories and a draw. Sacramento State extended its regular season shutout streak to 356:06 with the result, having not allowed a score since the fourth minute of a 1-1 draw against Big Sky Conference rival Northern Arizona on Oct. 20 of last year.
Thursday's win also snapped a three-match (0-2-1) winless streak against the Ducks in the history of the series and was the first victory for the Hornets against a Big Ten Conference opponent.
The Ducks suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to 1-1-1 after opening with a 4-0 win over Weber State and battling in-state rival Portland to a scoreless draw last week.
After being held to without a shot attempt in the first 45 minutes, Sacramento State came out firing to start the second period, gaining a pair of corner kicks and taking its first two shots of the match by Sydney Sharts and Schroeder, forcing Oregon goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein into saves.
The Hornet defense then came up big, blocking the Ducks' first attempt of the half and clearing another off the line to keep the match scoreless. Schroeder had another attempt turned away by Goldstein to earn a corner, one that would lead to the match's lone goal.
A ball played to the back post was chipped back across by Schoreder to Pickell, whose header was tipped by Goldstein off the crossbar and back into traffic. It fell to the feet of Mandaquit, who was in the right place at the right time to get her right foot on the ball inbetween two defenders and poke it home for the score.
Mandaquit became the fourth different Hornet to find the back of the net in 2025, following goals by
Micaela Romo, Schroeder, and
Tea Reyes against the Tigers. The assist against the Ducks was the first of Schroeder's career while Pickell picked up her second career helper.
Now chasing a goal, Oregon turned up the heat, but Palmatier and the rest of the Sacramento State defense was up to the task. Palmatier, who made three saves in a scoreless first half, added five more in the final 27 minutes to preserve the lead.
The junior made stops on back-to-back attempts by Abella Hunter and Sydney Chura a minute apart in the 66th and 67th minutes, then stopped Taylor Bryan on another attempt in the 70th minute. Bryan, who shared match-high honors with four shots on the day, was then turned away two more times in the 76th and 80th minutes.
Five more attempts in the final 13 minutes by the Ducks went awry as the Hornets stood tall until the final horn sounded.
Palmatier, who was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week honorable mention list following her performance against Pacific last week, moved into a tie for third on the school's all-time list with her 13 shutouts, while her eight saves gave her 192 for her career — just four shy of Kimberly Mata (2010, 2012-14) for fifth on that all-time list.
Sacramento State now has time to recover before returning to the field on Sunday (Aug. 24) at 4:30 p.m. PT against Central Arkansas to close out tournament play.
