WOMEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO NO. 19 CALIFORNIA IN NCAA OPENER

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team had its postseason run come to an early end on Friday afternoon, falling to No. 19 California by a 4-0 score in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash.

The loss ended a six-match winning streak as the Hornets finished their season with a 21-4 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the Big Sky Conference. Sacramento State ended the regular season second in the league standings before claiming the program's second-straight tournament title and the 13th overall in program history.

Cal improved to 14-8 overall and will face the winner of host Washington and Stetson in the second round on Saturday.

This season's 21 victories were the most by a Hornet squad since the 2008 team finished 21-7 overall and, coupled with the 20 wins in 2024, gave the program back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2004 (23-4) and 2005 (23-5).

Making its 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament overall, Sacramento State opened with a battle in doubles play, holding late leads in two of the three contests before falling by identical scores of 6-4 at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots as California took the doubles point. The tandem of Palina Saulevich and Reese Walker were tied at five at the No. 3 spot before the point was clinched.

The Golden Bears then posted straight-set singles wins at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 positions in the lineup to clinch the match. Senior Maddy Ferreros was able to take a set off the No. 32-ranked player in the nation at the No. 1 spot before falling, shutting out Mao Mushika, 6-0, in the opening set.

In addition to the team accomplishments, a number of individual milestones were also achieved.

Walker, who finished the year 17-5 overall, posted 12 wins at the No. 2 spot in the lineup which are tied for fifth on the school's single-season list for wins at that position.

Sophomore Lou Baudouin won 15 matches overall with 12 of those coming at the No. 3 spot, a total that ranks second in a season at that position behind only Carolina Svensson's 16-2 record in 2000-01.

Freshman Emilija Pranyte finished with 13 wins at the No. 4 position en route to a 16-7 overall record in her collegiate debut season, ranking tied for second for wins in a season at that spot in the lineup with Klara Petersson's 13-4 record in 2004-05.

Elena Mercioiu's 12-2 record at the No. 5 spot matched teammate Irene Riva's win total last season for second in a single-season, while Riva finished 10-0 at the No. 6 spot en route to a 13-1 overall record for the year after missing the first part of the season due to injury.

Overall, Marcioiu lead the Hornets with an 18-3 overall record, while Walker ended the year as the only Sacramento State player to finish 8-0 in Big Sky play in singles.
