SOFTBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE AT PORTLAND STATE, 4-3

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland State overcame a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning (all scored with two outs) to beat Sacramento State, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium.

The Hornets (16-18, 3-3) still won the series, 2-1, after sweeping Portland State (9-30, 2-4) in a doubleheader yesterday.

The Hornets scored single runs in the first (Madison Evers-Lyles RBI-single scoring Lafulafu Malepeai) and third (Caroline Evans' RBI-double scoring Faith Epperson) innings to take a 2-0 lead.

After Portland State scored a run in the third, the Hornets reclaimed a two-run lead (3-1) when Andrea Lira's two-out double scored Addy Buckley. On that same play, Jenna Birch was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base.

That was the last run the Hornets would score as Portland State pitching set down the final eight Hornet batters of the game in succession.

The Vikings scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning with two outs, including a two-run double and RBI-single. Sacramento State outhit the Vikings, 8-7.

Lira went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, extending her hitting streak to 15 games - the longest by a Hornet since 2018. Also with two hits were Malepeai (2-for-4 with a run) and Evers-Lyles (2-for-3 with an RBI).

The Hornets used three pitchers in the game, including Caroline Evans (3.0 IP), Alexa Ortiz (2.0 IP) and Kennedie Magorian (1.0 IP). Evans threw the first three innings.

Sacramento State had chances to score more early in the game, but stranded two runners in both the first and second innings.

The Hornets will play four home games next week, beginning on Tuesday vs. Fresno State at 3 p.m. The team will then host Northern Colorado for a Big Sky Conference three-game series on Friday-Saturday. The Hornets and Bears will play a doubleheader on Friday at noon, followed by a single game Saturday at noon.
