SOFTBALL FALLS TO STANFORD IN SECOND TO LAST HOME GAME OF SEASON

SACRAMENTO -- Stanford, the 15th ranked team in the nation, put up crooked numbers in each of the first three innings to eventually defeat Sacramento State, 14-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The game was played in front of a sizable crowd of 773 patrons. Combined with the 817 fans that came out to Saturday's Senior Day game, that's 1,590 combined fans over the last two games. That is the largest number of fans over a two-game stretch in Shea Stadium history.

Stanford, ranked 15th in the country in the NFCA top 25 poll, scored four times in the first, six in the second, and three more in the third to jump out to a 13-1 lead after three innings. The Cardinal (33-9) faced four Hornet pitchers over five innings.

Sacramento State, playing its second to last home game of the season, dropped to 22-21 with the loss. The Hornets will jump back into Big Sky Conference play later this week for a three-game series at Montana.

The Hornets had some offensive exploits, as Katie Marsh had a solo homer in the second, her sixth of the season. Sacramento State also scored three times in the fourth, highlighted by RBI-singles from Faith Epperson and Avery Brown, as well as a sacrifice fly from Jenna Birch.

The Hornets finished with four hits, including one each from Marsh, Brown, Epperson and Lafulafu Malepeai. Danyelle Leone (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 K) and Alexa Ortiz (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R) were both effective in relief in the circle.

Sacramento State's final conference series is a big one. The Hornets and Grizzlies will play a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. PT, followed by a Saturday single game at 11 a.m. PT. The Hornets and Weber State are currently in a tie for second place, and the top two seeds receive a bye at the Big Sky Tournament in Greeley, Colo. (May 6-9). Weber State is hosting three games this week vs. Northern Colorado.

The Hornets' final home game of the season is Wednesday, April 30, vs. Pacific at 4 p.m.
