SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jaydia Martin's put-back with 17 seconds left brought the Hornets back from down five points late in the fourth quarter and a pair of free throws by Madison Butcher iced the contest as Sacramento State rallied for a 56-53 win over Idaho on Saturday afternoon at The Nest.
The Hornets snapped their four-game skid in improving to 11-13 overall and 4-7 in Big Sky Conference play, holding the Vandals to just 33 percent in the fourth quarter while winning the period by seven.
Led by 19 points by Hope Hassmann, who was 7-for-7 from the field for the day, and a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double by Jennifer Aadland, Idaho fell to 16-7 overall and 8-4 in league.
Martin finished with a team-high 18 points, adding five rebounds and four assists, but no two points more important than her final two that gave the Hornets the lead for good.
Trailing by five with 2:48 to play, the Hornets clawed their way back at the free throw line as Lina Falk dropped in a pair after drawing a foul on a second-chance opportunity and Fatoumata Jaiteh converted twice after a Vandal turnover to make it a one-point contest.
Another travel call against Idaho on its next possession gave the ball back to Sacramento State with less than a minute to play and the Hornets were able to convert. Benthe Versteeg's three-pointer from the top of the key was off the mark, but Martin timed her run perfectly, going untouched to the left block, grabbing the rebound and putting it back in the same motion to give Sacramento State the lead.
Following an Idaho timeout, the Vandals missed a short turnaround with 7.4 seconds to play and the Hornets were awarded the ball out of bounds following a review that ruled the ball was last touched by the Vandals. Sacramento State called timeout to advance the ball and Butcher was fouled with 2.1 to play, sending her to the line.
Now trailing by three, Idaho called another timeout to advance the ball and had a look at the buzzer, but Olivia Nelson's attempt from the logo sailed wide right as the horn sounded.
Martin, who played all 40 minutes, finished 6-of-12 from the floor, including a quartet of three-pointers, en route to her team-high total, adding three steals on the defensive end. Jaiteh added 11 points and four rebounds to finish as the only other Hornet in double figures, while freshman
Rubi Gray added seven points on 3-of-3 from the field to go with four rebounds.
Versteeg chipped in seven points, four rebounds, and four assists, while sophomore
Lina Falk grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and swiped three steals.
Overall, Idaho shot 39 percent to Sacramento State's 34 percent, but the Hornets hit 46 percent in the second half — including 50 percent in the fourth quarter alone while clamping down on the Vandals at the other end. Sacramento State also held a 34-33 advantage on the glass, including 10 offensive boards, and were able to force Idaho into 24 turnovers.
After playing their last four straight at home, the Hornets head back out on the road for two games next week, taking on Northern Colorado on Thursday (Feb. 13) at 11 a.m. PT, and Northern Arizona on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 1 p.m. PT.
