GRAY LEADS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IN CBU CLASSIC FINALE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sophomore guard Rubi Gray posted her sixth-straight double-digit scoring performance with her team-high 11 points, but Sacramento State could not find a groove offensively on Saturday afternoon, falling to host California Baptist, 92-49, in the consolation game of the CBU Classic.

The Hornets suffered their third-straight defeat after winning three straight, moving to 5-4 overall on the year. The Lancers, who took their first loss of the season in the tournament opener on Friday, improved to 6-1 overall.

It was the first meeting between the two programs in their respective Division I histories and the first overall since 1987.

Gray, who led the Hornets with 19 points against Chattanooga on Friday and represented her squad on the all-tournament team, added a career-high eight rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes as the only Sacramento State player in double figures. Brooklyn Taylor and Benthe Versteeg added eight points apiece and combined for 10 rebounds, while freshman Jaety Mandaquit finished with a career-high seven points and four rebounds to go with a block and a steal.

During her run, Gray is averaging 17.5 ppg and 3.7 rpg while shooting .488 (42-for-86) from the floor overall.

Paced by five players in double figures, California Baptist led wire-to-wire on Saturday afternoon, opening the game on an 8-0 run and closing the first quarter with eight straight points to lead by 15 after one.

The Lancers never looked back, shooting just under 47 percent from the field for the game and draining 16-of-35 (.457) from beyond the arc en route to the win, never letting Sacramento State get closer than 12 points early in the second quarter.

Sacramento State returns to the court on Thursday (Dec. 4) with a short trip to Pacific for a 6 p.m. tip-off against the Tigers. It is the only game for the Hornets until after final exams when they host Simpson University on Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Hornet Pavilion.
