SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Junior guard Natalie Picton tied her career high with 24 points on the night — including the two free throws at the end of regulation to force overtime — but visiting UC Davis won it at the line in the extra period, hitting 6-of-10 from the stripe to edge Sacramento State, 70-67, on Monday night at Hornet Pavilion.
The Hornets had their three-game winning streak come to an end in falling to 5-2 overall on the season despite shooting just over 40 percent from the field to just 36 percent for the Aggies. It was the first overtime game for Sacramento State since defeating Portland State, 76-74, back on Jan. 4 of last year.
Led by 25 points from Ryann Bennett, UC Davis improved to 4-2 overall on the year, snapping its brief two-game losing streak, draining nearly half its makes from the line in the extra five-minute period.
Picton, whose previous career high in a Hornet uniform was 18 points set in the regular season opener against Stanton University, finished in double figures for the sixth time in seven games this year and reached the 20-point plateau for only the second time in her collegiate career. Her 24 points matched her collegiate best set against Idaho State while at Montana State on Jan. 16 of last season.
She hit 8-of-16 from the field on Monday night, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, while adding five rebounds and two steals in a career-high 43 minutes. The eight makes from the field tied her career high, while the six three-pointers were a new career high bar. Picton's five rebounds also matched her career high.
Three other Sacramento State players finished in double figures as Rubi Gray and Fatoumata Jaiteh ended the night with 12 points apiece while senior guard Benthe Versteeg added 11 points and a career-high tying 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the year (and the 11th of her career) to go with six assists and a pair of blocked shots.
Gray finished in double figures for the fourth straight game, while Jaiteh contributed her season high in scoring. Junior Keanna Salave'a tied her Hornet career high with eight rebounds — five of those on the offensive end — helping Sacramento State to a 46-37 advantage on the glass.
The Hornets led by three after three quarters, but an 13-2 run midway through the fourth gave the Aggies their largest lead of the night at 56-47 with 5:01 to play.
Versteeg got the Hornets back on track with a pull-up jumper a minute later to key a 6-0 run that made it a three-point game and Sacramento State was within a point with less than 10 seconds to go after Picton drained a three from the right side to make it 61-60.
UC Davis' Megan Norris was fouled with six seconds to go, but could make only 1-of-2 at the line, leaving the door open in a one possession game. Picton then got the ball at the top of the key where Nya Epps thought she had a steal just as time expired, only to be whistled for a foul that sent Picton to the line with a chance to tie.
The junior did not flinch, draining her only two attempts from the line on the night to send the game to overtime.
Each team could only muster one basket in the extra stanza as Gray sank a three-pointer giving Sacramento State a one-point, 65-64, lead after a pair of free throws from the Aggies. UC Davis then took control as Ryann Bennett and Avery Sussex bookended two makes at the line around a Emmy Ersdala lay-up for a five-point advantage with 1:28 to play.
Two from the line by Versteeg made it a three-point game with :11 to play, but the Hornets could not come up with the tying shot after Versteeg blocked Bennett's lay-up attempt three seconds later. Sacramento State missed a three-pointer with less than a second left on the clock and could not get a shot off in time after Nya Epps missed two from the line.
The Hornets now enter a stretch where they will play five of their final six non-conference contests away from home beginning this weekend in Riverside, Calif., where they will compete at the CBU Classic. Sacramento State opens on Friday (Nov. 28) at 2 p.m. against Chattanooga, before facing either host California Baptist or UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Nov. 29).
