WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO PORTLAND STATE IN SEASON FINALE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots and ended the day with 10 of the 12 corner kicks in the match, but the Hornets were unable to dent the back of the net as visiting Portland State netted a pair of first-half scores en route to a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.

Needing a victory to keep its postseason hopes alive, Sacramento State finished the year with a 6-11-1 overall record and a 2-5-1 mark in its final Big Sky Conference season. The six wins overall, however, surpassed last year's total and were the most since the 2019 squad finished with an 11-2-6 overall record and an unbeaten league mark.

The Vikings improved to 4-8-4 overall and 3-3-2 in conference, earning the No. 4 seed in the Big Sky Tournament and booking a date with Idaho in the first round.

Portland State broke up the shutout in the 14th minute as Maya Wells put home a rebound off teammate Ocean Rideout's initial shot for her first goal of the year and a 1-0 lead. Eleven minutes later, Rideout made it a three-point day with her fourth goal of the year, finishing off passes from Wells and Kamaria Hughes to double the advantage.

Chasing two goals, Sacramento State ramped up the intensity, but was stonewalled by the Vikings' defense as goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham finished with six stops in the final 45 minutes and got some help by a defender who cleared one off the line after a loose ball fell to the feet of Micaela Romo following a richochet off the crossbar in the 85th minute.

The Hornets were able to put eight of their 14 attempts on frame, and finished with a 10-4 shot advantage in the second half. Romo led her team with five shot attempts, four of those on frame, while Tea Reyes added three more attempts.

Goalkeeper Cynthia Waller finished with five saves, tied for the second-most in her Hornet career.
