SACRAMENTO --
Victoria Marthaler had 20 kills (12 more than any other player), and Sacramento State limited Eastern Washington to a .038 hitting percentage on the way to a sweep of the Eagles on Saturday at the Nest. Each of the three set scores were 25-16.
The Hornets won their fourth straight and completed their season-long four match homestand with a perfect 4-0 record. Sacramento State moved its record to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in league play while moving into a tie for second place in the Big Sky Conference standings. The Hornets sit just one game back of first-place Northern Arizona (7-2) with seven matches left in the regular season.
Sacramento State also improved its home winning streak to eight. The Hornets have not lost at home since a five-set defeat to Pepperdine in late August. During the eight-match home win streak, the Hornets have dropped just three sets, and each of the last three wins have come via sweep.
In addition, Sacramento State moved its record in the Nest to 74-12 against Big Sky opposition since 2015. Today's victory was also the 700th for the program since joining the Div. I ranks in 1991. The team is now 700-431 since the move to Div. I - .619 winning percentage.
The Hornets improved to 46-18 all-time vs. Eastern Washington, and have won nine straight in the series. Sacramento state has not lost to the Eagles since 2019.
Marthaler's 20 kills were nearly half of Sacramento State's total of 42, and she also hit .432 with just four errors in 37 swings. She was one of four Hornets to hit better than .400, including
Karlie Spohn (5 kills, 1.000 hit%),
Ashlynn Archer (6 kills, .500 hit%) and
Keonahi'ilani Solaita (6 kills, .455 hit%).Â
The Hornets had 10.0 team blocks, including four from
Skyler Gartin, three from Spohn, Archer and Marthaler, and two from
Greta Davis. They also had 12 aces (one shy of season best), which included three apiece from
Kate Doorn, Solaita and
Kaylee Piepho. Doorn also finished with 29 assists and seven digs. Solaita led all players with 10 digs, and Marthaler and
Reese Ampi each had seven.
The Hornets used 15 players in today's match.
After spending two weeks at home, Sacramento State returns to the road for matches at Idaho State on Thursday (6 p.m. PT) and Weber State on Saturday (5 p.m. PT). Of the Hornets' final seven regular season matchups, four will come on the road.
