WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS IN OREGON OPENER

PORTLAND, Ore. — Host Portland scored twice in both halves on Thursday afternoon, lifting the Pilots to a 4-0 victory over visiting Sacramento State in the first-ever meeting between the two programs at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore.

The loss snapped a three-match unbeaten streak for the Hornets, who fell to 1-2-2 overall on the year. Meanwhile, Portland snapped a two-match losing skid of its own, improving to 3-2-1 overall for the season.

With the kickoff moved up four hours due to extreme temperatures forecast for the area, it was the Pilots who were hot out of the gate, netting the first goal of the day in the eighth minute and then doubling their advantage with another score in the 20th minute for the 2-0 lead.

The score remained that way until 10 minutes into the second half when Portland scored its third of the day and capped the scoring with a goal in the 68th minute.

Hailey Still had two of the goals for the Pilots, while Cally Togiai finished with a goal and an assist on the afternoon.

Sacramento State closes out its stay in Oregon with a match on Sunday (Sept. 8) in Eugene against the University of Oregon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
