BASEBALL FALLS IN FINALE AT UTRGV, HEADS TO WAC TOURNAMENT AS THE EIGHTH SEED

EDINBURG, Texas — Junior Tyler White finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and senior Gunner Gouldsmith extended his team-high hitting streak to 10 straight games, but visiting Sacramento State was unable to come up with enough offense to push past host UTRGV, falling to the Vaqueros by a 6-2 score on Saturday evening in Edinburg, Texas.

The Hornets conclude the regular season at 26-30 overall and 14-16 in Western Athletic Conference play. They will be the No. 8 seed at next week's conference tournament in Mesa, Ariz., taking on No. 5-seeded Tarleton State in a single-elimination contest at 4 p.m. on Tuesday (May 21).

UTRGV improved to 27-23 overall and 15-15 in league play, clinching the No. 7 seed and a date with UT Arlington on Tuesday at Noon in a single-elimination game.

For White, it was hist 13th multi-hit game of the season, while Gouldsmith notched his second double-digit hitting streak of the year — trailing only his 18-game hit streak from Feb. 27 to March 26.

The Vaqueros struck for an early run in the bottom of the first only to have the Hornets come back and tie the game in the third as back-to-back walks to Cameron Sewell and Gunner Gouldsmith set the stage for White, whose single to left centerfield two batters later tied the game at one apiece.

A home run by UTRGV in the home half of the third regained the lead for the home team and the Vaqueros broke it open with three runs in the fourth to take control.

White got things started with a double for the Hornets in the eighth, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Jorge Bojorquez single through the left side to make it a three-run game, but UTRGV got the run back on another home run in the bottom of the inning for the final 6-2 score.

Jack Lopez (1-0) earned the win with 1.1 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, while Nico Rodriguez picked up his fourth save of the year. Freshman Sean Carey (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three earned on four hits and striking out two.
