PHOENIX — The Sacramento State baseball team had its series against Western Athletic Conference rival Grand Canyon evened up at one game apiece on Friday night as the host Lopes posted a 4-0 victory over the Hornets at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark in Phoenix, Ariz.
The loss dropped Sacramento State to 11-16 overall and 5-6 in league play, while GCU improved to 14-11 overall and 8-3 in conference action.
A pair of base runners on a walk and a hit by pitch in the first had the Hornets threatening before a double play got the Lopes out of a jam and Grand Canyon answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning to take a lead it would not relinquish.
After GCU added a run in the fifth, the Hornets tried to answer back in the top of the sixth as Brett Ott was hit by a pitch and was moved into scoring position on a Gunner Gouldsmith sacrifice. However, GCU kept the Hornets off the board with a strikeout to end the inning.
The Lopes added a run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Connor Mattison (4-1) faced only three over the minimum and struck out 10 batters en route to the no-hitter, while Tyler Stewart (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out a pair over four innings.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Noon on Saturday (March 30).
