SACRAMENTO -- Freshman Lou Baudouin remained undefeated on the year with her fifth consecutive win to start the spring while senior Mayya Gorbunova and freshman Irene Riva each posted singles wins on the day, but the Hornets were edged out by visiting Fresno State in a 4-3 decision on Saturday afternoon at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts.
The Hornets fell to 2-3 overall with the loss, while the Bulldogs moved to 2-2 on the year.
Fresno State took home wins at the top two doubles spots to take an early 1-0 lead in the match with Gorbunova and Reese Walker claiming a shutout, 6-0, victory over Daria Nazarenko and Mariya Vyshkina at the No. 3 spot.
Baudouin then wasted little time in evening-up the match with a quick win at No. 6, defeating Charlotte Gisclon, 6-2, 6-0, to improve to 5-0 overall to start the spring. Gorbunova, playing only her second singles match of the spring, then gave her team a short-lived 2-1 lead in the match with her win at the top spot in the lineup, downing Misaki Kobayashi, 6-1, 6-3.
That's when Fresno State turned the tables, earning straight-set wins at the No. 2, 3, and 4 spots in the lineup to officially clinch the match. Riva wrapped up the day with Sacramento State's third point, outlasting Hannah Pieper in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to improve to 3-1 in singles play this spring and clinch her second straight win.
The Hornets continue their five-match home stand with a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 10) beginning at 10 a.m., when they host Nevada and Jessup University in back-to-back duals. The match against the Warriors in the second half of the back-to-back is scheduled for 3 p.m.
