SACRAMENTO — Visiting UC Santa Barbara led wire-to-wire on Sunday, scoring multiple runs in four of its five scoring innings en route to a 12-0 victory over host Sacramento State in the finale of a three-game series at John Smith Field.
The loss moved the Hornets to 3-4 overall on the year, while the No. 22 Gauchos won their second straight contest to move to 3-3 overall on the season.
Newcomer Matt Masciangelo collected his first career hit with a single in the second inning, but that would be the only hit the Hornets would manage against four UCSB pitchers on the day. Teammate Elie Kligman did walk twice to extend his team-high total to seven on the year and Sacramento State left five on base for the contest, but was unable to push across a run.
UC Santa Barbara used the longball to jump out quickly, slugging a three-run home run in the first and adding a two-run shot as well as a sacrifice fly in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. A pair of RBI singles in the seventh tacked on two more before closing out with two-run double in the eighth and a third home run in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Ryan Gallagher (1-0) earned the win for UCSB, allowing the lone hit and walking one over five shutout innings while striking out seven before giving way to the bullpen, which struck out five and allowed only two baserunners over the final four innings.
Freshman Bryce Stockton (0-1) suffered the loss in his first career start, charged with three runs on five hits over three innings.
After seven straight at home to start the season, Sacramento State hits the road for the first time in 2024 on Tuesday, making the short jaunt to Berkeley, Calif., to take on California. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
