ON TO THE FINAL! WOMEN’S SOCCER UPSETS TOP-SEEDED MONTANA TO ADVANCE TO BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP

MISSOULA, Mont. — The Sacramento State women's soccer team will play for a Big Sky Conference championship for the first time since 2010 after upsetting top-seeded and host Montana, 4-3, in penalty kicks following a scoreless draw through 110 minutes on Friday afternoon in Missoula, Mont.

Now unbeaten in their last eight contests (3-0-5) dating back to a loss on Sept. 29, the Hornets moved to 5-6-8 overall on the year and will face No. 2-seeded Idaho in the Big Sky Tournament championship match on Sunday (Nov. 10) at Noon PT. The result came nearly 48 hours after Sacramento State advanced past No. 4-seeded Northern Arizona in penalties by the same score on Wednesday.

Montana moved to 12-2-5 overall on the season with the draw.

Friday's result moves the Hornets into the championship match for the first time since 2010 when Sacramento State was the No. 3 seed and posted a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Portland State in the semifinals before shutting out the top-seeded Lumberjacks, 1-0, in the championship match in Flagstaff, Ariz.

It is the fourth trip overall to the Big Sky championship match for the Hornets, who have never lost in the finals, posting a 2-0-1 mark. In addition to the 2010 victory, Sacramento State battled Idaho State to a 2-2 draw in the 2006 final only to fall on penalties, 4-3, then shut out Northern Colorado, 3-0, one year later in the 2007 championship.

Sunday marks the second meeting of the year between Sacramento State and Idaho after the Vandals posted a 2-0 win in Moscow, Idaho, back on Sept. 27.

Just like their regular season meeting that ended in a scoreless draw at a windy Hornet Soccer Field on Oct. 18, the Hornets and Grizzlies battled to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes and neither team was able to dent the back of the net in either of the 10-minute overtime periods.

Both teams converted their first chances from the spot before Montana took an early advantage when Sacramento State's second attempt rang off the crossbar. Enter freshman goalkeeper Sierra Sonko, who came off the bench to stonewall Bella O'Brien and Hayley Bass around a successful attempt by Erika Tilford that tied things up.

Ariana Scholten then stepped to the spot and converted to the top right corner for a 3-2 lead and, after the Grizzlies tied things up, Sharts came through with the winner, sneaking a shot to the bottom left corner under a diving Bayliss Flynn to set off the Hornet celebration.

Montana finished with a 16-15 advantage in shots and dominated the category in the overtime period, finishing with six of the eight combined attempts. However, sophomore goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier and the Hornet defense was up to the task, repelling each wave of the Grizzlies' attack.

Palmatier was stellar once again, making seven saves in the 110 minutes while posting her sixth shutout of the season and the 10th of her career. The 10 clean sheets are now tied for sixth alongside Kristy Milanese (1998-99) on the all-time list, while the six shutouts this year are tied for seventh on the single-season list with Savannah Abercrombie (2011) and Kimberly Mata (2013 & 2014).
