MIAMI — Sacramento State senior Jaydia Martin and sophomore Lina Falk each finished in double figures, but a late second-quarter run by Abilene Christian broke a two-point game wide open as the Wildcats pulled away from the Hornets en route to a 75-53 victory in the opening round of the FIU Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday afternoon in Miami, Fla.
The defeat moved Sacramento State to 4-3 overall on the year as the Hornets will face Wagner (1-5) in the consolation game on Sunday morning (Dec. 1) at 8 a.m. PT on ESPN Plus. The Seahawks fell to host FIU, 87-52, earlier in the day on Friday in their opening round contest.
ACU improved to 4-4 overall and will take on the Panthers in the championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Martin hit 4-of-7 from the field — three of those from beyond the arc — and added three rebounds to post her third double-digit performance of the season. Falk finished in double figures for the fifth time in seven contests with her 10 points, also grabbing a trio of rebounds and adding a steal.
Freshman Rubi Gray set a career-high with eight points, while senior Katie Peneueta — who returned to Sacramento State in the off-season and missed the first six games of the season — finished with a pair of three-pointers in her 2024-25 debut.
A 9-0 run by the Wildcats, during which they went 5-for-5 from the field, erased an early three-point Hornet advantage, but the Hornets battled back to re-tie the game at 15-all and trailed by only three after a final-minute triple from Abilene Christian.
Martin's three-pointer at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter regained the lead for Sacramento State and Fatoumata Jaiteh answered a Wildcat three with an "and one" to give the Hornets a 23-21 lead with 6:48 to play in the half.
That's when Abilene Christian took over, closing out the period on an 18-5 run while holding Sacramento State to just two field goals en route to a 39-28 halftime advantage. The Hornets never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field while holding Sacramento State to just 33 percent for the game and turned 23 Hornet miscues into 30 points.
