POCATELLO, Idaho — For the first time since 2013, Sacramento State played consecutive overtime games but, unlike last week, the team could not rally for a victory, falling at Idaho State, 30-27.
Â
The Hornets had numerous opportunities to put the game away during regulation but had a missed field goal, two turnovers in the end zone, and a third which resulted in a 53-yard scoop and score.
Â
Down 24-21 late in the fourth quarter, Sacramento State got the ball back with 1:46 showing on the clock and one timeout. The big play in the series was 38-yard completion from
Carson Conklin to
Danny Scudero, who took the ball to the ISU 9-yard line with 26 seconds remaining. The team, however, could not get closer and forced overtime with a 27-yard field goal from
Zach Schreiner.
Â
Once in the extra period, Sacramento State was unable to pick up a first down and needed 41-yard field goal from Schreiner to take a 27-24 advantage. Idaho State started the series with a pair of incompletions but, instead of facing third-and-10, the team drew a pass interference penalty to give it a first down at the 10-yard line. On the next play, Kobe Tracy found Jeff Wiemer in the right side of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.
Â
Sacramento State had a stellar first half where the team rushed for over 250 yards but entered the intermission knotted at 21-21.
Elijah Tau-Tolliver rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in the first two quarters and
Ezra Moleni added another to put Sacramento State up 14-7 early in the second quarter. The big play of the half came when Conklin was sacked on third down and his attempt to throw the ball away landed backward allowing for Reynolds to score the defensive touchdown.
Â
The final minutes of the first half ended with a flurry. The Hornets appeared to take the lead with a touchdown pass to
Jared Gipson before the officials ruled the ISU defender was able to wrestle the ball away in the end zone for an interception. That turnover turned into a 42-yard TD pass to Christian Fredricksen to put ISU head 21-14. Sacramento State had an answer late in the half, traveling 75 yards in just 36 seconds to tie the game on a 19-yard pass to Gipson.
Â
The second half started with strong efforts from the defense.
Will Leota intercepted a pass on the opening possession and the Hornets were on the move with
Curron Borders breaking free for an apparent touchdown before he was stripped just outside the goal line. The ball bounced around in the end zone and was eventually recovered by ISU. The only points of the quarter came on a 35-yard field goal by Gabe Panikowski to give the Bengals a 24-21 lead.
Â
Idaho State had its chances in the fourth quarter to put the game away, converting a fake punt late in the period for a first down. The Hornets answered with three stops to give the ball back to the offense, leading to the game-tying drive.
Â
Sacramento State finished the game with 538 yards of total offense. Borders (145) and Tau-Tolliver (100) became the first Hornet duo to each rush for 100 yards in a game since
Marcus Fulcher and Cameron Skattebo against Incarnate Word in the 2022 NCAA FCS Playoffs. Conklin completed 24-of-40 passes for 270 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Â
Kobe Tracy passed for 296 yards and three scores while completing 24-of-38 passes. Fredricksen was his top target, hauling in 10 passes for 163 yards and two scores.
Â
The Hornets return home to welcome Portland State on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m.
