HONOLULU -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team took the doubles point then posted wins in four of the six singles matches on the day, helping the Hornets into the win column for the first time in 2024 thanks to a 5-2 triumph over Hawai'i Pacific on Friday at the Kailua Racquet Club.
Sacramento State evened its overall record at 1-1 to close out its trip to the islands, while the Sharks dropped their season opener.
The Hornets opened with a win at doubles, taking the match at No. 3 by default and then clinching the point with a win by the tandem of Maddy Ferreros and Weronika Ejsmont at No. 2 for the 1-0 lead in the match.
Singles opened with another point for Sacramento State, which claimed the win at No. 6 by default, then rattled off victories by Irene Riva at No. 3 and Best Lee at No. 5 to officially clinch the dual. Riva won her Hornet singles debut with a 6-0, 6-3, triumph over Jayanne Palma, quickly followed by Lee, who won her first singles contest with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Lynn Kader.
The Sharks took their two points at the top two spots in the lineup via a third-set tiebreaker before freshman Lou Baudouin won her singles match for the second straight day, outlasting Leonie Muller in a tiebreaker at No. 4 by the scores of 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 1-0 (10-4).
With classes starting next week, the Hornets will not return to the courts until they head to the Bay Area to take on San Jose State on Saturday (Jan. 27) at Noon.
