SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Freshman Lou Baudouin remained undefeated in singles play with her third win of the season, while junior Maddy Ferreros earned her first win of the year to clinch points for the Hornets on Saturday as the Sacramento State women's tennis team was outlasted by host San Jose State in a 5-2 decision at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The Hornets fell to 1-2 overall on the year, completing a three-match road trip to start the spring season, while the Spartans moved to 2-0 overall.
San Jose State won at the top two doubles spots in the lineup to take an early 1-0 lead in the match by identical scores of 6-3, but singles play would be a grind for both sides as four of the six contests were forced to decisive third sets.
Baudouin was the first to get the Hornets on the board, drawing her team even with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-2, win over Duru Durgun at No. 5 to move to 3-0 overall on the year. The Spartans retook the lead with a straight set win at No. 4 as Roalina Youseva defeated Irene Riva, but the remaining four contests would be marathons, with the Hornets bouncing back from first-set losses in three of those to push things to a third set.
Freshman Reese Walker answered a first set loss with a 6-4 win in the second, but Irena Muradyan would prevail, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, to make it 3-1 overall, and Carolina Millan responded for San Jose State at the No. 1 spot after Sacramento State's Weronika Ejsmont forced the third set with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, win to officially clinch the dual.
Ferreros narrowly pulled out a straight set win at No. 2 before losing in a second-set tie breaker, but cruised to an easy win in the third to defeat Cheuk Ying Shek, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1. Best Lee, playing at No. 6, won her second set before falling to Jovana Babic, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Sacramento State opens a run of five straight home matches with two duals next week, hosting San Francisco on Friday (Feb. 2) at 1 p.m., before welcoming Fresno State on Saturday (Feb. 3) for an 11 a.m. first serve.
