SACRAMENTO -- Led by
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin's career-high 12 blocks, Sacramento State posted a season-best 18.0 team stuffs on the way to a 3-1 victory (26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15) over Portland State on Friday evening at The Nest.
With the victory, Sacramento State (10-7, 3-0) is the only unbeaten team in Big Sky Conference league play. Portland State (10-5, 2-1) and Montana State also entered this evening at 2-0 in league, but the Bobcats were swept in Missoula.
The Hornets are 3-0 in the Big Sky for the second straight season, and third time in the last eight years. Sacramento State is now 51-27 all-time against Portland State, and the Hornets are 57-9 in Big Sky home matches since 2015.
Portland State had its five-match winning streak snapped. The 18.0 team blocks were easily the most yielded by the Vikings this year, and PSU's .142 hitting percentage was its second lowest output of the season.
There were plenty of tense moments as each of the first three sets were decided by two points. Trailing, 23-24, in the first set, Sacramento State ripped off three straight points which included a
Caitlin Volkmann kill, and two straight
Bridgette Smith kills. In the second frame, with the Hornets clinging to a 24-23 lead, Kamba-Griffin and
Ellie Tisko combined on a block to give Sacramento State the 2-0 lead.
After the three straight close frames, the Hornets began the fourth on a 15-2 run and cruised from there.
Kamba-Griffin's 12 blocks were not only a career best, but they are tied for the 10th highest mark in program history. Three of her blocks were solo stuffs, and she had multiple blocks in all four sets. Sacramento State finished the match with 51 kills and a .250 hitting percentage, and received a team-high 16 kills from Volkmann while Smith had 13 kills.
Five different Hornets had at least four blocks in tonight's match - Kamba-Griffin (12), Tisko (5),
Kalani Hayes (5), Smith (4) and Volkmann (4). Libero
Caty Cordano had a match-high 19 digs, including a few of the spectacular variety. Hayes had six kills and a .400 hitting percentage, and Tisko eight kills and a .312.
Greta Davis added five kills and five digs.
Setters
Kate Doorn (24 assists, 7 digs) and
Hailey Plugge (18 assists, 8 digs) ran the 6-2 offense, and Plugge added a pair of aces.
Tonight marked the only match of the week for Sacramento State, and the team will play twice on the road next week at Idaho on Thursday, and Eastern Washington on Saturday.
