FOOTBALL HAS STREAK SNAPPED WITH LOSS AT NO. 7 IDAHO

Hornets tie the game in the fourth quarter only to see the Vandals win in the final second

MOSCOW, Idaho — It was hard to match the drama from last year's meeting between Idaho and Sacramento State, but the two teams produced another thriller on Saturday where the No. 7 Vandals took a 30-27 lead over the No. 2 Hornets with a 30-yard field goal from Ricardo Chavez with one second remaining. The Hornets then attempted to lateral the ball on the kickoff return but the pitch fell short and was recovered by Idaho which ran it in for a score to make it a 36-27 final.

The loss snapped Sacramento State's 22-game regular season win streak, its 19-game Big Sky Conference win streak, and its 15-game road win streak. The Hornets dropped to 3-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Idaho is now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Big Sky games.

After the Hornets tied the game, 27-27, Idaho's Jermaine Jackson returned the kickoff 36 yards and a late hit against Sacramento State moved the ball over midfield with just under five minutes to play. The Vandals ran the ball on their seven offensive plays of the series to take the ball to the Hornet 13-yard line and eat precious time off the clock. Chavez then secured the win with a 30-yard field goal.

Both teams recorded field goals on their opening possessions which resulted in a 3-3 tie at the end of the first quarter. The Vandals took nearly eight minutes off the clock on the game's first drive before settling for a 29-yard field goal from Chavez. Sacramento State took the ball to the Idaho 6-yard line but couldn't find the end zone, resulting in a 36-yard field goal from Zach Schreiner.

Idaho stretched its advantage to 13-3 with two scores in the second quarter. Anthony Woods accounted for the first touchdown of the day as he rushed up the middle for a 2-yard score. Chavez then crushed a 50-yard field goal with 1:26 remaining in the half.

Sacramento State had a late response to make it 13-10 at the half. The drive started with a 49-yard pass from Kaiden Bennett to Jared Gipson that saw Gipson catch the ball along the right sideline and then break free. A roughing the passer and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Vandals placed the ball on the 5-yard line where Bennett connected with tight end Austin Jarrard for his first reception as a Hornet.

Idaho got creative on its first series of the second half as quarterback Gevani McCoy took the return pitch on a reverse and then floated a ball down the right sideline for a 52-yard touchdown pass to Turon Ivy. On the play, Ivy and Hornet defensive back Gavin Davis-Smith fought for the ball in the air drawing flags. After a conversation, pass interference was called on the Hornets resulting in a touchdown.

Sacramento State had its own response with an 8-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Bennett connected with Gipson for an 11-yard completion on 4th-and-11 and the pair hooked up again for a 31-yard strike to take the ball to the 2-yard line on the ensuing play. Marcus Fulcher then rushed for the touchdown around the right edge for his fourth score of the year.

The third quarter fireworks continued with McCoy finding Terez Traynor for a 60-yard pass. Much like the previous long touchdown, there was extensive contact between the receiver and the defensive back but no flag was thrown.

Sacramento State made it a one-score game yet again when Schreiner tied his season long with a 44-yard field goal. During the drive, the Hornets picked up a 4th-and-1 with a rush from Elijah Tau-Tolliver and Anderson Grover later had a 9-yard reception on 3rd-and-7.

Idaho was on the move after the score before Caleb Nelson punched the ball free from Hayden Hatten and the loose ball was recovered by Dillon Juniel. Sacramento State then drove 54 yards on six plays to tie the game on an 11-yard pass from Bennett to Fulcher. During the drive, Grover had a 32-yard reception on 3rd-and-17 and a face mask penalty took the ball into the red zone.

Sacramento State finished with 305 yards of offense with 236 coming through the air and 69 on the ground. Bennett was 15-of-29 with Gipson leading the receivers with 91 yards. Fulcher was the team's top rusher, gaining 44 yards on 10 carries.

Armon Bailey recorded his second consecutive game with double digit tackles, finishing with 11 stops.

Idaho accumulated 412 yards of offense with McCoy throwing for 234 yards while completing 15-of-21 passes (71.4 percent). Woods rushed for 117 yards.

Sacramento State returns home to face Northern Arizona on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m. The Lumberjacks (1-3, 1-0) picked up their first win of the season with a 28-14 victory over Montana on Saturday.
