SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State shortstop Wehiwa Aloy was named the Western Athletic Conference's Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the second team while senior Martin Vincelli-Simard and freshman JP Smith picked up first-team honors as the league office announced its 2023 postseason honor roll as voted on by the head coaches on Monday afternoon.
Aloy becomes the first Hornet to earn the league's top freshman award since Parker Brahms in 2017 and becomes the fifth Sacramento State winner overall, joining Rhys Hoskins (2012), Chris Lewis (2013), and Sam Long (2014). He joins Vincelli-Simard and Smith as first-time all-conference honorees.
One of the most prolific hitters in the WAC in 2023, Aloy finished the regular season among the top 10 in the league in 11 different categories, while standing No. 12 in the NCAA in hits (88), No. 14 in runs scored (69), and No. 20 in total bases (155). The owner of 30 multi-hit games this season, Aloy finished the year batting a team-high .376 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI, setting the school record for most home runs by a freshman in the program's Division I era, while leading the team in six categories and finishing second in slugging (.662), doubles (15), and home runs.
His 69 runs scored rank second on the program's single-season list behind only Brandon Marshall's 70 in 1998, and he is the first Hornet to collect 80 hits in a season since Ian Dawkins (89) in 2018. Aloy's 88 hits are tied for sixth on the school's single-season chart, while his 14 home runs are tied for 10th.
Coming back for his fifth year, Vincelli-Simard made the 2023 campaign count, finishing the year batting .342 with 16 doubles, 17 home runs, and 60 RBI, while slugging .684 and posting a .408 on-base percentage. His 17 home runs this year are tied for fourth on the school's single-season list and accounted for nearly half of his 35 career home runs — which are tied atop the school's all-time list with Harvey Hargrove (1995-97).
A four-time Academic All-WAC selection, Vincelli-Simard's .684 slugging percentage is the eighth-highest in a single season in school history while his team-high 60 RBI are tied for ninth on the single-season chart. His 20 multi-hit games — which included a team-high eight, three-hit contests — were second on the team, while he led the squad with 21 multi-RBI contests.
Smith wrapped up his first Division I campaign with a .339 average to go along with 14 home runs and 45 RBI, slugging .632 on the year and posting a 1.010 OPS. His 14 home runs match his teammate Aloy for the most by a freshman in the program's Division I history and included a pair of multi-home run games against Utah Valley on April 6 and Utah Tech in the regular season finale on May 20 and two grand slams against WAC regular season champion Grand Canyon on March 18 and nationally ranked Stanford on April 18.
He finished the year with 17 multi-hit games — eight of which came during a team-high 16-game hitting streak from April 15 to May 12 that ranks tied for ninth in school history — and drove in multiple runs 11 times, including a career-high five in the upset of the Cardinal.
Sacramento State wrapped up the 2023 regular season with a 30-26 overall record and a 14-16 mark in WAC play, winning its last five consecutive games to extend its streak of 30-win campaigns to 11 consecutive years dating back to 2012. The Hornets are the only Division I program in the state of California to accomplish that feat.
