WOMEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS PAST VISITING UC RIVERSIDE

SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team wrapped up its third shutout victory of the year and won its fifth consecutive match at home on Thursday afternoon, blanking visiting UC Riverside by a 4-0 score at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts.

The victory evened-up the Hornets' record at 9-9 overall on the year while improving them to an impressive 8-1 on their home courts this spring. The Highlanders fell to 2-13 overall with the loss.

Sacramento State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the match thanks to wins at the top two doubles spots. The tandem of Mayya Gorbunova and Tsveti Yotova made quick work at No. 2 with a 6-1 victory, then Weronika Ejsmont and Best Lee clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 position.

Sophomore Maddy Ferreros, playing at the No. 1 spot on the singles ladder for the first time this year, gave her team a quick 2-0 lead in the match overall with a 6-0, 6-4, victory over Kamya Nair. It was the 10th overall singles win for Ferreros this season, snapping a two-match skid in the process.

Senior Tsveti Yotova then made it 3-0 with a comeback victory at No. 3, rebounding from a 6-0 loss in the opening set against Brionna Nguyen to take the next two by the scores of 6-1 and 6-4 for her third consecutive singles victory. Sophomore Julia Moraes then clinched the match with a three-set win at No. 5, outlasting Niki Shahbazi, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, for the final point of the day, snapping a four-match skid and winning for the first time since March 3.

The final three singles matches went unfinished with Best Lee holding a 4-3 lead in the third set of her No. 4 singles match and Ejsmont knotted at 2-2 in the second set at the No. 2 spot.

Sacramento State wraps up the week with its final Big Sky Conference dual of the year, traveling to Flagstaff, Ariz., to take on league-leading and unbeaten Northern Arizona (11-6 overall, 7-0 in the Big Sky) on Sunday (April 16) at 11:30 a.m.
