WINNING STREAK SNAPPED; SOFTBALL FALLS TO CAL

SACRAMENTO -- California's Anna Reimers threw a four-hit shutout to lead the Golden Bears to a 7-0 win over Sacramento State on Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak, and Sacramento State dropped to 21-13. The Hornets also fell to 11-6 at home, and were shut out for just the third time in the last 27 games. Cal, which is receiving votes in both the NFCA and ESPN.com top 25 polls, improved to 25-12-1.

Reimers was in control the entire way, allowing just four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. She threw 99 pitches, and gave up just two hits (both from Lewa Day) during the first six innings of the contest. Sacramento State did get a pair of runners aboard in the seventh (singles from Alexis Parish and Rylee Gresham), but could not push across a run.

Day finished 2-for-3 with a ringing double in the sixth inning that missed being a home run by two feet. Day (43) is just one homer shy of the Sacramento State career record of 44 homers, held by Suzy Brookshire. She was the only Hornet to finish with a multiple-hit game.

Leandra Coronado went 0-for-3 and had her 11-game hitting streak snapped. That is the longest by any Hornet this season.

Starter Marissa Bertuccio threw well, as the Hornets and Bears were scoreless through three innings. However, Cal scored once in the fourth, twice in the fifth, once in the sixth, and three times in the seventh. Bertuccio threw six innings, and two of the four runs she allowed were unearned. Caroline Evans worked the seventh.

Cal had three extra base hits, one of which was a home run from Kacey Zobac.

Sacramento State returns to Big Sky Conference play later this week when the Hornets host Weber State for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday. That includes a doubleheader at noon on Friday, and single game Saturday at noon.
