SACRAMENTO -- Right-hander
Marissa Bertuccio threw a four-hit shutout to highlight Sacramento State's doubleheader split with Weber State on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Hornets won the first game, 1-0, before dropping the nightcap, 3-2.
As expected, both games were grinders between what has been the top two teams in the Big Sky Conference for years. In fact, the Hornets and Wildcats were selected as co-favorites to win the Big Sky title in the preseason coaches poll. Although Weber State (8-24, 2-3) is down a bit this year, it looked like a typical close game between the two rivals.
Sacramento State moved it record to 22-14 and 6-2 in league play. The Hornets and Wildcats will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at noon at Shea Stadium.
In Game 1, Bertuccio tossed a four-hit shutout while securing her 11th complete game of the season. Of the four hits, only one (double) went for extra bases and she walked one while striking out six. In the process, Bertuccio, who is well on her way to a second straight Big Sky Pitcher of the Year award, improved to 12-6 with a 1.65 ERA.
Pitching was impressive on both sides all day as the Hornets' staff finished with a 1.50 ERA, and the Wildcats' staff had a 1.08. In fact, Sacramento State's lone run in the first game came in the fourth inning when Weber State committed two errors which turned into an unearned run. Weber State's Mandy Johnson was the tough luck losing pitcher despite allowing just five hits and one unearned run in six innings.
In Game 2, the Wildcats scored three times in the first two innings, and hung on late in a 3-2 win. Sacramento State scored twice in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, but both teams went scoreless the final four innings of the contest.
Caroline Evans pitched well, allowing seven hits with three runs and four strikeouts over seven innings. The Wildcats' Jayci Finch (W, 4.1 IP) and Brooke Hatfield (SV, 2.2 IP) combined to allow two runs and eight hits to secure the victory.
Sacramento State had plenty of chances to score in the nightcap, stranding 11 runners on base. In fact, the Hornets left at least one runner on base in every inning except the second. That included multiple runners aboard in the third (3), fifth (2), sixth (2) and seventh (2) innings. Sacramento State had runners at first and second with no outs in the seventh, but could not score.
Offensively, six Hornets finished the day with two hits, including
Jada Walker,
Katie Marsh,
Carley Morfey,
Samantha Parish,
Alexis Parish and
Gwen Ludwig.
Lewa Day was 1-for-1 with three walks in the nightcap, but saw her career-high nine game hitting streak snapped in Game 1.
