SACRAMENTO -- Keahilele Mattson's three-run homer in the sixth inning broke open a one-run game and Fresno State defeated Sacramento State, 8-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The two teams braved a one-hour rain delay before the game even started. Originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, the Hornets and Bulldogs did not have enough daylight (because of the rain delay) to play a second game. Shea Stadium does not have lights.
The Hornets, who are playing their final week of non-conference play, dropped to 14-10 with the loss. The Bulldogs, who were playing at Shea Stadium for the first time since 2013, improved to 10-16.
Fresno State never trailed, but the game was tied at 1-1 through four innings. Sacramento State tied things in the bottom of the third after
Carley Morfey singled home
Katie Marsh. The Bulldogs, however, would score the next four runs unanswered, including a single run in the fifth, and the three-run blast from Mattson in the sixth.
Sacramento State chopped the deficit to 5-2 in the sixth on a
Rylee Gresham pinch hit RBI-single, but the Bulldogs scored three times in the seventh to put things away.
Marissa Bertuccio (8-4) pitched six innings for the Hornets, and saw her streak of eight straight victorious decisions come to an end.
Savannah Wahl threw the final inning in relief.
Sacramento State finished with six hits, including two from
Alexis Parish. Morfey, Gresham,
Amber Rodriguez and
Leandra Coronado also had hits for the Hornets.
Sacramento State will play two more non-league games before opening Big Sky Conference play next week. Those two games will come this Saturday in a doubleheader at Pacific beginning at 1 p.m.
