SOFTBALL SPLITS ROAD DOUBLEHEADER AT PACIFIC; EVANS THROWS 5-HIT SHUTOUT

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Highlighted by a five-hit shutout from Caroline Evans, Sacramento State split a road doubleheader at Pacific on Saturday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field. After dropping the first game, 3-0, the Hornets came back to take the nightcap by a 5-0 score.

Today's doubleheader marked the final tuneups before Sacramento State (15-11) opens Big Sky Conference play next week with a three-game home series vs. Northern Colorado. Pacific is now 9-15 with the split.

Evans (2-2) lowered her season ERA to a team-best 1.60 after allowing just five hits with no walks and three strikeouts over seven innings in the nightcap. The shutout was the first of her career, and she needed just 86 pitches to earn the win. Of the five hits allowed, four were singles. The sophomore's seven innings pitched were a career high, she faced just five batters over the minimum, and the Tigers never advanced a runner past second base.

Third baseman Lewa Day led off the second game with a home run, the 40th of her career. She is now just four homers shy of the school record of 44, held by Suzy Brookshire. Gwen Ludwig and Leandra Coronado hit safely in both games. Ludwig finished the day 4-for-7, while Coronado was 3-for-5 with a walk. Ludwig is now batting .357, the highest mark on the team among Hornet regulars.

Coronado has now started four straight games at shortstop, and is 5-for-9 over that stretch offensively.

Savannah Wahl was very good in relief in the opener, allowing just a run and two hits in four innings of work. The Hornets stranded three runners in scoring position during the first two innings of Game 1, but did not muster much of a threat after that against Pacific pitching.

In Game 2, the Hornets scored a run in the first, two in the second, and two more in the fifth. The big blows were the solo homer from Day in the first, a two-run single from Ludwig in the second, and an RBI-single from Katie Marsh in the fifth.

Ludwig (4), Coronado (3) and Day (2) finished the afternoon with multiple hits, while Alexis Parish, Rylee Gresham, Samantha Parish, Carley Morfey and Marsh also had knocks.

The Hornets jump into Big Sky play next week with a doubleheader on Friday vs. Northern Colorado, and single game on Saturday. First pitch on both days is noon. The Hornets were selected as the co-favorites with Weber State in the Big Sky preseason coaches poll.
