SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State combined for 16 runs and 16 hits on the way to a doubleheader sweep of Maine on Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The Hornets won the opener, 11-2, in five innings, and followed that with a 5-4 comeback win in the nightcap. In fact, in that second game, Sacramento State overcame a 4-0 deficit with a five-run fifth inning.
With the victories, Sacramento State improved to 14-9, and has won 11 of the last 14 games. Today marked the first-ever meeting between the Hornets and Maine.
Ten different Hornets finished the day with hit, and three (
Katie Marsh,
Samantha Parish,
Jada Walker) hit safely in both contests. Sacramento State had 10 hits in Game 1, and six more in Game 2.
The Hornets used four pitchers in today's games, including
Caroline Evans (5.0 IP),
Marissa Bertuccio (4.0 IP), Savanna Wahl (2.0 IP) and
Kelsey Alcantara (1.0 IP). Bertuccio tossed four shutout innings in the opener and has won eight straight decisions to improve to 8-3.
In the second game, Evans allowed zero earned runs in five innings to earn the win, while Wahl went two innings to earn the Hornets' first save of the season.
Carley Morfey finished the day with four RBIs,
Lewa Day had three, Marsh and
Nikki Barboza posted two, and
Alexis Parish and
Gwen Ludwig had one. Marsh scored four times out of the leadoff spot in the lineup, and Day scored twice. If fact, the top three hitters in Sacramento State's lineup - Marsh, Ludwig and Day - combined to score nine of the Hornets' 16 runs.
Sacramento State returns to action next week when it hosts Fresno State at 3 p.m.
