BIG INNING LIFTS CENTRAL MICHIGAN PAST BASEBALL

SACRAMENTO -- Junior Jorge Bojorquez finished with three hits and drove in a run while Cesar Valero and Josh Rolling also notching a pair of hits, but a big five-run sixth inning by Central Michigan broke open a one-run game to that point, leading the Chippewas to an 8-3 win over Sacramento State in game three of their series on Friday at John Smith Field.

Both teams moved to 8-6 overall on the year with the result as Bojorquez notched his second three-hit game — and his fourth multi-hit performance — of the season, while Rolling's two-hit performance tied him with teammate Wehiwa Aloy, whose season-opening 13-game hitting streak came to an end Friday, with a team-high six multi-hit games this year.

However, with a walk in the ninth, Aloy has now reached base safely in all 14 contests, while Martin Vincelli-Simard extended his hitting streak to five games.

A walk, a double, and a ground ball in the first plated the opening run for CMU, but that was it for either team over the first five innings. A Valero double put a runner in scoring position for the Hornets in the second, and Bojorquez had his first hit of the day with a single in the third, but Sacramento State could not find the key hit to tie the game.

That led to the flood gates opening in the sixth as three straight doubles to lead-off the inning plated a pair and a successful squeeze for a base hit three innings later added a third run to make it 4-0. Central Michigan added two more with two outs later in the inning on a fourth double, before Sacramento State worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a ground ball to stop the bleeding.

The Hornets got two of the runs back in the seventh as a walk to Vincelli-Simard and a sharp single to left by Valero put two on and a fielder's choice had runners at the corners for Garet Crenshaw to lined a single up the middle to break up the shutout. After a pitching change, Rolling greeted the Chippewas' reliever with another single back through the box, scoring Jeffery Heard to make it 6-2.

It stayed that way until the ninth with Central Michigan got both runs back on a single and a throwing error on an attempted pickoff at second base to make it 8-2.

Sacramento State tried to mount another rally in the home half as Heard drew a walk, was balked to second with one out and moved to third on Rolling's single to right to put runners at the corners. Bojorquez followed quickly by bouncing a single through the left side to score Heard and make it 8-3 and a walk loaded the bases for Gouldsmith, but Ryan Palmblad induced a game-ending pop-up to freeze the rally.

Starter Evan Gibbons (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing the six runs on eight hits and striking out four before giving way to the bullpen. Adam Mrakitsch (2-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits over 6.2 innings, striking out four.

The final game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m., weather permitting.
